BS 1881-124:2015 Hardened Concrete Testing Across England, Scotland & Wales

BS 1881-124:2015 sets out methods for analysing hardened concrete to determine its constituent materials and key properties. The standard is used when investigating existing structures, assessing compliance, or diagnosing deterioration. The 2021 amendment (A1:2021) refines accuracy and precision expectations for several test methods

Summary of testing in BS 1881-124:2015

  • 1. Sampling

    • Provides procedures for obtaining representative samples of hardened concrete from structures or test elements.

    • Emphasises correct extraction, handling, and documentation to avoid contamination or alteration.

    2. Treatment of samples

    • Details how samples must be prepared before analysis, including crushing, drying, and sieving.

    • Ensures uniformity so that chemical and physical tests yield reliable results.

    3. Cement and aggregate content

    • Outlines chemical methods to determine cement content and aggregate content.

    • Includes an alternative method based on insoluble residue for aggregate determination.

    • Provides apparatus examples (e.g., CO₂ determination setup).

    4. Aggregate grading

    • Specifies procedures for determining the particle size distribution of aggregates recovered from the concrete.

    • Helps assess original mix design and potential degradation.

  • 5. Original water content

    • Describes methods to estimate water content at the time of mixing, based on chemical analysis and mass balance.

    • Useful for back-calculating the water–cement ratio.

    6. Identification of materials

The standard includes tests to identify:

    • Type of cement

    • Type of aggregate

    • Other constituents such as admixtures or additions

    7. Chemical content tests

BS 1881-124 also covers determination of:

    • Chloride content

    • Sulphate content

    • Alkali content

These are critical for assessing corrosion risk and durability.

    8. Reporting requirements

    • Specifies the format and detail required in test reports.

    • The 2021 amendment adds clearer guidance on accuracy of reported results, expected repeatability and reproducibility, and precision levels for the five main test methods.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BS 1881-124:2015 TESTING

  • What is BS 1881-124:2015 used for?
It provides methods for analysing hardened concrete to determine constituents (such as cement and aggregates) and key chemical indicators used in investigations, compliance and deterioration diagnosis.

  • What does sampling involve under the standard?
Sampling focuses on obtaining representative hardened concrete samples with correct extraction, handling and documentation to avoid contamination or alteration.

  • What chemical contents are commonly assessed?
BS 1881-124:2015 includes methods for chloride, sulphate and alkali content determination—important for assessing durability and corrosion risk.

  • Can the testing help estimate the original water content or water–cement ratio?
Yes. The standard includes methods to estimate original water content using chemical analysis and mass balance, supporting back-calculation of water–cement ratio.

  • Does BS 1881-124 specify reporting requirements?
Yes. It sets out report structure and detail, and the A1:2021 amendment provides clearer guidance on accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility and precision expectations.

TTL have been working directly as my analyst for the last 12 months on a very complex asbestos removal scheme, they have achieved all of their KPI’s without fail and on a number of occasions surpassed their SLA in acting for us on planning issues associated with the demolition in regard to contamination which cannot be removed as part of the normal sequence of operation.

There reports are always issued within timescales and they have policed the reports by the Licensed asbestos contractor faultlessly sometimes in very difficult circumstances.
