BS 3882:2015 Topsoil Testing Across England, Scotland & Wales

BS 3882:2015 sets out the classification and quality requirements for multipurpose and specific purpose topsoil. Testing helps ensure the soil is suitable for landscape, horticultural, and construction applications.

Summary of testing for topsoil to BS 3882:2015

  • 1. Physical properties

    • Texture (particle size distribution)
Determines proportions of sand, silt, and clay, and helps confirm the soil falls within acceptable texture classes.

    • Stone content
Limits the amount of stones >2 mm and >50 mm to help ensure workability and suitability for planting.

    • Organic matter content
Confirms the soil has sufficient organic material for fertility without being excessive.

    • Moisture content
Helps assess handling characteristics and consistency.

    2. Chemical properties

    • pH value
Must fall within a defined range (typically 5.0–8.5 depending on soil type) to support plant growth.

    • Nutrient levels (N, P, K, Mg)
Helps assess whether the soil contains adequate but not excessive nutrients.

    • Electrical conductivity (salinity)
Identifies potential salt levels that could inhibit plant growth.

    • Cation exchange capacity (CEC)
Indicates the soil’s ability to retain and exchange nutrients.

    3. Contamination and safety

    • Heavy metals (e.g., lead, cadmium, arsenic)
Must be below maximum permissible levels to support environmental safety.

    • PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons)
Checked to help confirm the soil is free from harmful organic contaminants.

    • Visible contaminants
Includes plastics, glass, metal, and other man-made debris.

  • 4. Biological characteristics

    • Weed seeds and propagules
Soil should be free from invasive or pernicious weeds.

    • Phytotoxicity tests
Helps confirm the soil does not contain substances harmful to plant growth.

    5. Classification outcome

After testing, the soil is classified as:

    • Multipurpose topsoil — suitable for general landscaping and planting

    • Specific purpose topsoil — tailored for particular uses (e.g., low fertility soils for wildflower meadows)

TTL have been working directly as my analyst for the last 12 months on a very complex asbestos removal scheme, they have achieved all of their KPI’s without fail and on a number of occasions surpassed their SLA in acting for us on planning issues associated with the demolition in regard to contamination which cannot be removed as part of the normal sequence of operation.

There reports are always issued within timescales and they have policed the reports by the Licensed asbestos contractor faultlessly sometimes in very difficult circumstances.
