CCV Testing: Chalk Crushing Value for Fill and Road Construction
The CCV (Chalk Crushing Value) test is a chalk-specific compaction/crushing assessment used to help determine whether chalk is suitable for use as engineering fill or in road construction. It is similar in principle to the MCV (Moisture Condition Value) test and uses the same portable equipment—making it practical for both laboratory programmes and project-led assessment.
Because CCV is designed specifically for chalk, the test is performed on the 10–14 mm fraction. Coarser particles are crushed down to this size to prepare a representative 1 kg test portion. The sample is then compacted/crushed and the relationship between number of blows and penetration is recorded. In the UK, the CCV is determined using the steepest section of the slope on a log-scale plot of blows versus penetration.
Why CCV testing matters
CCV testing helps you understand whether a chalk will break down excessively under compaction and trafficking. Stronger, more durable chalks are more likely to perform well as fill and in pavement layers, while weaker chalks can degrade, soften, and lose strength—creating long-term performance risk.
Typical CCV result bands
-
0.1–0.3 – Strong chalk
-
0.3–0.6 – Medium strength chalk
-
> 0.6 – Weak chalk

Thank you very much for the air sampling results – and please accept our grateful thanks for resolving this issue so quickly and for the promptness of the report.
Your analyst, Lee, was very helpful and his suggestions and advice appreciated.
We would have no hesitation in recommending The Testing Lab and will be in touch soon with regards arrangements for a full asbestos survey for the rest of the site.
TTL have been working directly as my analyst for the last 12 months on a very complex asbestos removal scheme, they have achieved all of their KPI’s without fail and on a number of occasions surpassed their SLA in acting for us on planning issues associated with the demolition in regard to contamination which cannot be removed as part of the normal sequence of operation.
There reports are always issued within timescales and they have policed the reports by the Licensed asbestos contractor faultlessly sometimes in very difficult circumstances.
